Javier Marias and I decide to see other people.

One should never tell anyone
anything or give information
or pass on stories  or make
people remember beings  who
have never existed or trodden
the earth or traversed the
world, or who, having done so,
are now almost safe in uncertain,
one-eyed oblivion.
Opening to
Your Face Tomorrow:
Fever and Spear
by Javier Marias

I tried.

I tried twice.

I just couldn't do it.

It's not you, it's me.

I'm sorry to let you down.

Maybe if we had met at some other point in time.

20 years ago, maybe it would have worked out.

Maybe if we meet again 20 years from now, we'll find we're made for each other.

It happens.

But, at this point in our lives, I think it's for the best if we go our separate ways.

There's someone out there who's right for you.

I'm sure of it.

You have so much to offer.

You deserve so much better.

Sure, we can keep in touch on Facebook.

I really do want the best for you.

In fact, maybe I have a reader in the United States I can hook you up with.

Maybe that reader will let me know in a comment below.

If more than one person asks before Saturday, July 2, Dakota can help me choose the one that's right for you.

I'll be happy to send set you both up.

I know you'll find someone soon.

I'm sorry I let you down.

I love this post, such a great way to put it! I'm not interested in the book so don't pick me, but had to say how much I loved this. :)

LOL! Only read A Heart So White with my bookclub and it also wasn't a match made in heaven :)

What a great way to put it! It sums up how I feel about Gabriel García Márquez. Maybe I'll try him again in another 20 years. God knows Jane Austen didn't work the first time around for me.

Laughing and shaking my head. Not done yet but love this book so much it hurts a little. Feel psychically laid bare. Therapy may be in order. :)

Haha, I'm with Frances...exactly with Frances.

C.B. James, sorry this didn't work out for you. Again. :( Care to share what didn't work for you and Javi or do you need to keep that a secret? :D Thanks for giving it the book another go with us anyway!

Richard, I'm not sure I can pinpoint what went wrong. This is the kind of book you need to submerge yourself in. It's one that does take some effort, too. I'm fine with both of those most of the time, but this time it just wasn't working for me. I've had this experience before and ended up loving the book on the third or fourth try. I think I will give Marias another go at some point in the future.

C.B. James, thanks for the explanation. Interesting. If I understand what you're getting at, I've had the same sorts of experiences with Julio Cortázar and Proust at different times even though I eventually came around to love both writers way more than the norm. I guess a lot of our reading experiences across the board often have to do with lining up the right timing for certain books. Cheers!

I'd like to ask for it, but I'm afraid it might be over my head. Tried to enjoy Perec, and felt a little lost; apparently some books are better read in a group where one can physically sit together and discuss them. Over some delectable treat.

Interesting post, very nicely written. You tried your best, sometimes no matter how hard you put out, results may not change. I like how you didn't give it and kept trying!
