It's time to sign up for The TBR Dare.
The idea is simple--starting January 1, 2011, read only books currently in your TBR stack. You can sign up for one week, for one month, or you can go for the gusto and do whole enchilada--January 1 to April 1--three months of reading only books you already own.
(The TBR Dare ends on April Fool's Day because only a fool would take this dare.) Full details can be found on The TBR Dare page by using the tab at the top or clicking the picture in the sidebar.
You wanted to read all those books when you bought them, so now's your chance.
If you have decided not to accept challenges this year, remember, The TBR Dare is not a challenge; it's a dare. There's a difference. And you can modify the rules to suit yourself. Make exceptions for book club books or just pledge to read one book from your TBR shelf. Whatever you like. Dakota and I believe challenges, read-a-longs and dares are all about having fun. So have fun.
If you'd like to join in, sign up by leaving a comment below. I'll add your blog to the links list on The TBR Dare page this weekend. If you like, please help spread the word by posting one of the buttons to your blog. The more the merrier.

At first I was thinking, "I can't do this because I already have committed to books to review for book tours and publishers." But then, I opened the box my mind was in and realized, "Dummy! You already owned them (or, committed to them)." So that counts, right? I'm in! Very fun, and apparently necessary, to buy less/read more.
Now, I'm also doing this with my lipstick collection: only wear the ones I own already instead of buying every new red which catches my eye. Although, this doesn't pertain to your dare, so sorry for going off on a tangent. ;)
With the exception of book club stuff, I'm in for the long haul. I have waaaaaaay too many unread books languishing around here.

(scream) (laugh) You are freakin' relentless about this. I saved a button a while ago to ponder the possibility but kept waffling. I love to acquire. But then I just had this head slapping minute. I can keep buying books. I just won't be reading them for a while. Just reading off the mountainous tbr pile. So I'm in. I don't know for how long but I am in.
I'm chuckling at Frances! You are very persuasive you know. Anyway, I think you already know I'm in for the long haul. I've been preparing, squirreling away books in preparation. This is going to be so good for me, I may not want to stop at April 1st.
I'm in for the whole shebang! I have so many unread books on my shelves it's actually pitiful.
Belleza, I am counting all the books I have on reserve at the library, but don't actually have, as metaphorically on the TBR shelf. So, yes, they count. Good luck with the lipstick thing. ;-)
Amy, Welcome aboard. Let's see who cracks first.
Frances, I think you'd have to set up a specail sub-section of your TBR shelf until April 1. Then you can go ahead and merge them all into one big happy shelf.
Sandy, I've re-arranged my own TBR shelf and am raring to go.
Trisha, It's like buying a fancy birthday cake and then not eating it. Wasteful. Simply wasteful. Go ahead. Eat.
Oh, go on then. My feeble exclusion is library books (hey, it's a public library that buys its books with tax money and I'm a tax paying member of the public so, in a way, a library is one huge "to be read" pile). I have pledged to turn off my TV in 2011, and I have stacks of unread books so I will try and cling on until April.
I am definitely in! I can't wait :D amckiereads.wordpress.com
I'm having a dilemma. I've got an urge lately to read all the pregnancy/baby books on my TBR list- but I don't own any of the books. And if I wait until April- well, the baby's due in May so then it feels too late. Can I make exceptions for books of that subject only? silly, maybe, but I'm torn!
I think I'm in! I believe I won all the books I need for my books clubs. My only exception is the one library book I have checked out right now that I'll read in the next three weeks. I really need to focus on books I own!
Count me in! I think once I add the books I received for Christmas, I'll fill the bookcase I've allotted for TBR. I need to do this, so I can buy more books!
Man of Errors, If you include inter-library loans you'll have one amazing TBR stack. Glad your in.
Amy, Welcome to The TBR Dare.
Jeane, You can take The TBR Dare for just the month of January, or even just a week. Or go ahead and make eceptions for pregnancy/baby books if you like. Either way works.
Rebecca, I'm rushing through several library books right now, myself.
bookishpelican, I've a full bookcase, too.
Yay! I still do want to do it all the way to April, but just make exceptions for the preggy books. I was even thinking if that wasn't okay with the Dare, to just follow along and only read TBR books alongside the preg. books for those months anyways.
I was able to resist the first two dares but not the third one, C.B. James! I'm in for all of January I hope, but I'll probably be the first one to cave unless my buddy Frances beats me to it (I imagine she has more willpower than I, though). Will try and post on this in the next two days. Thanks, I think, and Happy New Year to you!
I just might be able to manage this, having received books for Christmas which I'm dying to read. I'm in for three months!
Sorry, I mean to sign my name--I'm Wendy. :)
I am in! I've resolved to read all of my TBR by the end of 2011, so this should get me kicking. I'm signing up for the whole thing.
